Finding the actual My Documents folder.

The My Documents folder shows up many places.  This is to find the actual location of the My Documents folder.  The Desktop & the Start Menu only show links to the real location of the My Documents folder.

  • Click on the Start button.

  • Left-click on Run...

  • Type cmd in the Run box.

  • Take note of 2 things.  1) D:\ is the drive letter where my profile is located.  2) Administrator is the profile I am currently using.  The drive letter or username are probably different for you.  You need the correct directory information from your computer to find the data contained in your profile.
  • Write it down & type exit.   Press the Enter key.
  • Go back & left-click on the Start button & left-click on Run...
  • Type the drive letter you found earlier.  I would type d:\ to open a new window. (Shown below)

  • Double left-click on Documents and Settings.

  • Double left-click on the username you found earlier.  In my case Administrator.

  • Double left-click the My Documents folder to see it's contents.  Pressing the Alt & Enter keys at the same time, while a folder is highlighted, will show the folders properties.  This tells you how much space that folder and all the folders & files inside of it take up.  You can drag this folder into your backup program or copy it somewhere else.
  • This folder can become quite larger.  It is good practice to seperatly backup videos, music & pictures to CD or DVD.  Most media is still usuable in portable devices when burned with a standard ISO cd structure.  This folder alone can sometimes exceed the limits of even a DVD.
